Yannis Pantazis

Principal Researcher


Yannis Pantazis, PhD, is an Principal Researcher at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas, Greece. He received his BSc, MSc and PhD in Computer Science from the University of Crete in 2004, 2006 and 2010, respectively. He was a Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst from 2011 to 2015 and at the University of Crete between 2016 and 2017. His research interests include diverse areas of Data Science such as Applied Probability Theory, Uncertainty Quantification, Machine/Deep Learning, Signal/Speech Processing, Optimization Theory, Dynamical Systems and Bioinformatics. He is author of more than 35 referred scientific publications which has been presented in various high-ranking journals, conferences and workshops. In 2015, he received the 1st honorable mention (bronze medal) on DARPA’s Forecasting Chikungunya Outbreak Competition.

Olympia Simantiraki

Postdoctoral Researcher


Olympia Simantiraki is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of the Basque Country (2017-2022), specialising in speech enhancement beyond intelligibility. During her Ph.D. studies, she was funded with the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Early Stage Research Fellowship as part of the ENRICH ETN research program. In 2015 - 2016, she worked as a researcher in the Institute of Computer Science at the Computational BioMedicine Laboratory of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas. She did an internship at TOSHIBA's Cambridge Research Laboratory - Speech Technology Group in the United Kingdom from November 2014 to February 2015. She holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Computer Science from the University of Crete, graduating in 2012 and 2014, respectively. Her primary research focus is on speech enhancement, with the goal of improving intelligibility while preserving audio quality.

Maria Markaki

Postdoctoral Researcher


Maria Markaki is a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of the Foundation of Research and Technology-Hellas (IACM-FORTH). She is a graduate of the Department of Physics of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens (1990) and holds an M.Sc degree from the same university (1994). In 1995 - 2001, she worked as a research associate in IACM-FORTH at the Wave Propagation Group. In 2005 and 2011 respectively, she completed her Master's and Ph.D. studies in Computer Science, University of Crete, specialising in Computational and Cognitive Vision (Advisor prof. Stelios Orfanoudakis) , and Speech Processing (Advisor prof. Yannis Stylianou). In 2013 - 2019, she was a postdoctoral research fellow in Computer Science, University of Crete, specialising in Machine Learning (Advisor prof. Ioannis Tsamardinos). In 2020 - 2022, she worked in the EU Marie Curie RISE project (neuronsXnet) analyzing neuronal networks in the mouse brain (PI prof. Maria Papadopouli in collaboration with Smirnakis Lab, Harvard Medical School).

Michail Raptakis

Doctoral Student


Michail Raptakis is a PhD student at the Computer Science Department, University of Crete. He received his BSc and MSc in computer science from the same department in 2019 and 2022. He is currently working for Dr. Yannis Pantazis' team at the Institute of Applied and Computational Mathematics of the Foundation of Research and Technology, Hellas. His research interests mainly focus on Signal Processing, Speech Processing, and Generative AI, such as Text-To-Speech synthesis.
